In India, young professionals are increasingly queuing up at traditional tailors to order a bespoke or made-to-measure suit.
Ask Sachin Vaish, co-owner of Vaish at Rivoli in Delhi. "There has been a big shift in our business to professionals in their 20s and 30s, which include marketing guys from IT firms, people from financial services, private equity, consultancies and large multinationals," he says.
The family-run store, which has been in business since 1940, has traditionally served the creamiest layer of society, says Vaish, adding that the regular clientele includes industrialists, CEOs of companies and television presenters who want Italian material, Turkish buttons, Japanese lining and so on.
But now, young professionals can afford to spend Rs 30,000 to Rs 1 lakh on a suit, he says, adding that the business from this group of customers has grown to 35-40% of the store's revenues, up from 15-20% a decade ago. "They (young professionals) want bespoke because they are well travelled, concerned about their appearance and expect detail which off-the rack does not live up to," he says.Tialors design the professional shirts and suits at shirt design script.
Just when formal wear appears to be on the decline at workplaces, the pricey bespoke suit has managed to retain its edge for those who can afford it.
As Barney Stinson, the ultimate champion of suits for this generation, put it, discerning young professionals in India Inc are willing and able to spend big bucks to "suit up".
Nikhil Goenka, a Bangalore based tech entrepreneur who runs a start-up called Social Cocoa, is one such fan of bespoke suits. His favourite, he says, is the one from Prestige The Man Store for about Rs 25,000. "India has a tradition of tailored suits. Off-the-rack doesn't give you the same fit or finish and I can get the same fit as an Armani, at a far more affordable price," says the 30-year-old. A suit makes a statement, he says.
That Goenka speaks for a growing number of customers is evident in the expanding business of men's apparel maker Raymond, for example, which has clocked a threefold rise in its suits business in the past two years while its bespoke Made-to-Measure brand, the company's fastest-growing segment, has quadrupled during this period. According to company executives, prices range between Rs 15,000 and Rs 4 lakh while the average customer spends about Rs 30,000.see more....
