Online Tailor Store

Image
At the Perfect Fit's upstairs work area last week, Hengameh Tirgar wielded a razor blade to remove two small knit belt loops from the waist of a cashmere sweater, moving them higher to the client's actual waistline. Iren Kapkarin opened seams on a jacket, while Mr. Choi hunkered over a colorful man's jacket at a sewing machine. A floral Lela Rose sheath dress waited to have its darts let out. A box contained a fox stole and a magazine photo for its makeover. I discovered the Perfect Fit after investing in a sequined Dries Van Noten skirt that drooped awkwardly in back. Having lost two dresses to poorly executed alterations at my dry cleaner, I recalled an haute couture collector recommending a Pasadena clothing restorer called the French Hand Laundry, which in turn recommended the Perfect Fit. Men's shirt cuff- Online Tailor Store

Image
When it comes to cuffs, the main decision is whether to go for a barrel or French cuff. Traditionally, French cuffs are dressier and more formal, allowing men to sport one of the quintessential pieces of jewelry in men’s style: cufflinks. This accessory alone works as a personal statement and means of self expression, which has brought French cuffs into a more mainstream market, not exclusive to formal shirts. To top it off, Italian S prezzatura  has found in these cuffs yet another way to break conventional rules, by wearing them unfastened and often folding them over the jacket  sleeve. In India, young professionals are increasingly queuing up at traditional tailors to order a bespoke or made-to-measure suit. Ask Sachin Vaish, co-owner of Vaish at Rivoli in Delhi. "There has been a big shift in our business to professionals in their 20s and 30s, which include marketing guys from IT firms, people from financial services, private equity, consultancies and large multinationals," he says. The family-run store, which has been in business since 1940, has traditionally served the creamiest layer of society, says Vaish, adding that the regular clientele includes industrialists, CEOs of companies and television presenters who want Italian material, Turkish buttons, Japanese lining and so on. But now, young professionals can afford to spend Rs 30,000 to Rs 1 lakh on a suit, he says, adding that the business from this group of customers has grown to 35-40% of the store's revenues, up from 15-20% a decade ago. "They (young professionals) want bespoke b...

Bespoke Tailoring - 3D scanning: the future of bespoke suit tailoring

Image
Clothing tailors have been around since the 18th century, making bespoke and custom fitted clothing for men and women alike. Even today, many tailoring processes remain traditional, with tailors taking measurements using a tape and making suits based on the numbers, though the practice has started to dwindle because of a lack of interested young tailors. In Hong Kong, one of the world’s most popular destinations for custom tailoring, however, one company has decided to revive the practice by incorporating modern technologies into their work. Hong Kong based  Gay Giano  has recently developed a 3D scanning system that effectively scans the client’s body to compile a set of detailed and accurate measurements to base the bespoke suit’s design off of. Matthew Lee, business development director for Gay Giano, explains the necessity of bringing tailoring practices into the contemporary, technological world.  He says , “There’s a huge disconnect between these traditional...

Custom Shirt Design Script

The shirt is an everyday article of clothing, worn with everything from suits to sweaters or just with a pair of classic dark denim. And with an absolute wealth of options available, deciding on whether you’re smartening up or dressing casually for the occasion can help when it comes to your sartorial selection. We’ve pulled one of your favourite items apart to help you discover the anatomy of a shirt. A classic point collar is a time honoured, versatile option, that’s popular because it is understated, smart and suits all face shapes. Next up you’ve got spread and cutaway collars. “All cutaway collars are spread collars, but not all spread collars are cutaway collars”. To stop any confusion, let’s get down to the nitty gritty. In the simplest terms, a spread collar has points that finish wider apart than a classic point collar, so a wider angle in between and a cutaway collar is an even more extreme version of this. They’re often considered slightly more formal than a class...

How to care for your bespoke suit

Image
Firstly, the customer should speak with an experienced tailor not a salesman. The tailor’s vast experience would ask the right questions, determine the purpose the suit is required for and guide him in the right direction. Importance of fabric:   We need cloth to stretch, shrink, and to be moulded around body shapes. Wool cloth in all weights, designs and best quality is created for us to tailor. Process for a 3-piece suit:  Clients are welcomed by a consultant to go through our selection of over 4000 cloths and to discuss the style choices. Each client will then see a Senior Coat (Jacket) Cutter and a Senior Trouser Cutter. Our Trimmer will then select the linings, canvas, felt, buckram, thread, shoulder wadding and other elements to match the cloth and to go in to the construction of the suit. These elements go to a specialist tailor - one for the coat, one for the trousers and one for the waistcoat. The client has two further fittings and approves the garment...
